Travel with the Traffic Light System … TravelFox explains …

As we approach the summer months, here at TravelFox HQ we were as keen as mustard to learn of the latest travel updates from Central Government, announced on 24th June. We've also wondered how this might affect honeymooners and their holiday plans.

There IS some good news, and to be honest, it was unrealistic of people to think that overseas travel would be a ‘free for all’ this year.

TravelFox has now had time to get to grips with latest traffic light ‘rules’! Of course, these can change any moment, and we’re happy to advise on a more detailed level if honeymooners would like us to help them book a much-needed holiday!

The List

The excellent news is that Spain’s Balearic Islands (including Ibiza), Madeira, and Barbados have been added to the UK’s green watchlist! A total of 16 destinations are set to be added to this green list from 4am (British Summer Time) on Wednesday 30thJune. Destinations also include Antigua, Barbados, Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Bermuda, the British Antarctic Territory, the Cayman Islands and many more. There's a few honeymoon destinations in this list.

You can find the full list here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/red-amber-and-green-list-rules-for-entering-england

The range of destinations is very positive for the travel industry, yet we must be aware of the rules, too.

The new additions came with a clear caveat that they could move to amber or even red lists swiftly if infection rates rise.

Some of the Rules

While this is great news, be aware there are still strict rules in place. This includes taking a Covid-19 test, booking and paying for a day 2 Covid-19 test and completing a passenger locator form before travelling to England; then on arrival in England, you must take a Covid-19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive. If you test positive, then the usual Covid-19 quarantine rules apply. NHS Test and Trace will also be in touch with you if someone you’ve travelled with tests positive.  More details here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/if-youre-told-to-self-isolate-by-nhs-test-and-trace-or-the-covid-19-app/

Other good news is that those who’ve now received two vaccinations, and are therefore fully vaccinated,  will probably be able to arrive in the UK from amber listed countries (see list here https://www.gov.uk/guidance/red-amber-and-green-list-rules-for-entering-england) without needing to quarantine. This will take place in stages throughout the summer, so please check the current rules if this news affects you.

More details about amber list travel, family travel and testing will be released sometime in July.

Travelling this Summer 2021

So, what about travelling this summer? With the travel industry wanting clarity, Department of Transport Minister Grant Shapps said: “We’re moving forward with efforts to safely reopen international travel this summer. Thanks to the success of our vaccination programme, we’re now able to consider removing the quarantine period for fully vaccinated UK arrivals from amber countries – a real sign of progress.”

Mr Shapps went on to say that the Government is taking a cautious approach.

We have to say while it’s cautious, it is also confusing!

Yet for the travel industry, even these shaky steps are welcome. We understand that there is a need for caution. Yet with over 60% of the UK nation now having had two jabs, and around 80% having received one jab, the vaccination roll out is doing well.

And of course, the lists and rules are revised every three weeks.

Now, we do need to mention the red list countries, which at the moment means you CANNOT travel to them for holiday purposes. Anyone who travels needs to travel to red list countries face steeps costs including a stay in a government-managed quarantine hotel. Details can be found here: https://www.which.co.uk/news/2021/06/travel-traffic-light-green-list-countries-where-holiday-abroad/

Amber listed countries have yet another set of rules including self-isolation and Covid tests. The Government is not keen on UK residents travelling to these nations and amber list countries should only be visited for essential reasons.

So, this leads us nicely onto the announcement yesterday about the green watch list. For those desperate for an overseas break, then this is a positive if very tentative development.
